How do you answer “What are your goals?”

I recommend breaking your goals into short-term, with long –term in mind.  Ex.  "Right now I am looking for a position in a company with a solid track record.  I want to contribute to a team, bringing my extensive experience in XYZ field, to add to the team mix.  Long-term goals will depend on the career path available at XYZ Company.  Ideally, I would like to progressively move within XYZ Company either locally or nationally/ internationally.”

Are you getting plenty of interviews, but no job offers?

If you are getting the interviews, congratulations your resume is a great one!  Now what?  You need to improve your interviewing skills. You simple aren’t selling yourself to the hiring manager.  Preparation and confidence will go a long way into getting that offer.   You have the technical skills, education/ certifications, you are in there pay scale, so what is the problem?  People hire people they like!  During the interview process you need to come across as a likable person who will fit in well with the current culture.   No hiring manager wants to disrupt their current team.  Are you going to be an Eagle or an Anchor?  Preparation is the key to success!

The one true test to know if your resume is a great one…

Every Professional Resume Writer, Career Coach, HR Manager and Recruiter has a different opinion when it comes to resume formats:

• One page, two, three or four?
• Font size 10, 11,  12
• Times New Roman, Calibri, or Verdana?
• Include a Summary or not?

And the list goes on and on…..  The best way to know if you have a great resume is if you are getting interviews.   If you are getting interviews, excellent, you got a winner!

However the one true test to know if your resume is a great one…, if your phone isn’t ringing then you need to make changes.  What needs to be improved?

The first step is to customize your resume to the specific position you are applying for.  You simply cannot use the same resume over and over again.  You need to speak the language of the hiring company.  Add those words that are being used in the job description to your resume.

The second step is to consolidate your resume to use only those items that are relevant to the position you are applying for. What were your responsibilities and what did you accomplish?

The third step is to test your new resume.  Keep tweaking it until you are getting the results you want!

First Impressions

A first impression might be the only one you get to make.  A great suit, shined shoes, and good grooming will give you a psychological lift and greater confidence in yourself.

Dress For Success

  • Dark, conservative two-piece suit; white shirt or blouse
  • Freshly polished, scuff-free shoes, dark socks
  • Modest earrings, rings on one finger only and a simple watch
  • No perfume or cologne
  • “Quiet” tie

Dressing appropriately for an interview and you’ll be taking a long step towards your own success!

How to Show Enthusiasm on an Interview…

Enthusiasm is one of the most important traits you need on an interview.  If you are not excited about the interview, how will you be excited when you get the job?

First, convince yourself of your value.  Armed with this conviction, think positive with a smile, energy and your enthusiasm will show.

When the hiring manager asks you; “How are you today?”  Don’t say good.  You want to say… “I am doing great and this interview is the highlight of my week!” “I am very excited about speaking to you about this great opportunity!”

This enthusiasm will set the tone for the rest of the interview.
